Traveling from home - New York

Family and friends have been asking me for years to create this blog, because of all the different countries I've traveled to, the fascinating people and cultures, enticing foods and inspiring lifestyles, trends and discoveries.

On my bucket list, to walk on the Brooklyn Bridge, and lo and behold,
to see the Statue of Liberty in the distance.
This blog isn’t meant to be a  « top 10 blogs of the world » or a cooking instruction blog, or a photography competition blog, or a how to or lifestyle or selling blog, it’s mostly for fun and to share so many years of travel, pictures and different flavors and tastes.

I’m no master chef, but we have always loved to cook and experiment and have get togethers in our home, or out, and our children and friends often call or text us for  «how do you make that? »

With the lockdown, I’ve finally had a chance to think this through and put this together, in an entirely amateurish way and that’s OK! It isn’t meant for anything else than sharing.

I don’t really know where to start with travel pictures. With these uncertain times, we obviously aren’t traveling right now, but even I, who was becoming somewhat jaded with airplanes, airports, hotels, jet lag, languages, cultural challenges, have now understood that traveling and seeing the world is an important part of me.

Since there’s no rhyme or reason to this, I think it will be by kind of food we’re craving = country = food inspiration.

And since New York was one of the last places I traveled to, this past January, over a weekend during Chinese New Year, I thought I could dedicate today’s post to this vibrant, multicultural, inspiring, heart wrenching, absolutely mind-blowing city.

Donc ça serait New York!

It was an very interesting rainy day, Chinese New Year this year.  Here I was, just before the coronavirus outbreak, walking around in the heavy downpour, trying to catch a glimpse of the dragon and following the parades and cheer and firecrackers nonetheless.

"This Callery pear tree was discovered amidst the wreckage of  the 9/11 attacks.  Recovery workers transported the tree and its burned and gnarled stumps and replanted it.  It was replanted at the Memorial in 2010 and the survivor tree bursts into blossom each spring."
At the Memorial. No words.

I took this picture for loved ones who love to play in the stock market.  This being in January, no one could have imagined the events that would play out only a few weeks later.

This pic is for all my nieces and all girls who could face a bull (statue was placed initially in front of one).

On our first night in Manhattan, friends asked what should we eat?! It was near midnight, we tried several restaurants and none would have us.  My craving was street food and a real flat crispy crust with pepperoni and sausage !  So we found greasy, dollar pizzas and I was in heaven !

Yes, that is the Apollo theater in Harlem, where the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, who made her singing debut here, Billie Holiday, and in later years Luther Vandross, Mariah Carey would perform, a landmark

This is Alexander Hamilton's house, originally from 1802.  In 2008, they lifted it and moved it from it's initial grounds to restore and protect it.

One of my favorite songs is "Imagine." This is the memorial in Central Park to John Lennon, only a few feet from his former apartment building across the street.
Thank you, dear custodian, for this picture, and to the gospel singers inside, for the uplifting tribute.

Cotton sponge cake with strawberries and cream cheese frosting

My kids had a birthday to celebrate so I made the cakes and they decorated. I used to do this when my children were small, set up a table for them to decorate cookies or gingerbread houses, even had parties like this, and to this day, they like assembling treats and are good cooks. Here's the batter recipe I often use which you can find in my other recipes (mocha sponge, apple cider cake...) : Cotton sponge cake recipe : 4 eggs, separated 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar 1-1/4 cup (180 g) cake flour 3/4 cup (150 g) confectioner's sugar 1/4 cup cider (60 g) (French kind, or 4.5% alcohol) or beer or carbonated water 1/4 cup (60 g) sour cream (or thick cream) 1/4 cup (60 g) milk (as needed) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt Preheat oven to 180° F / 350° C.  Line pan with parchment paper.  I used a 7" spring-form pan and a small fluted brioche mold. Beat egg whites until soft peaks form.  Add granulated sugar a little at a time and continue...

Fluffiest cinnamon rolls, with yogurt cream frosting

I must say this is the most wonderful cinnamon rolls dough I've discovered to date. Light, fluffy, delicious, what more could you ask for?  I filled half the dough with brown sugar, cinnamon, and nuts, while the other half was filled with some homemade strawberry jam. Here is the recipe for the dough, inspired by Foodess.com, which has the best explanation for the dough, go to the website for more info.  I will always use this dough to make these buns from now on. 240 ml warm milk 2 large eggs 570 g all-purpose flour 100 g sugar 2 1/4 teaspoon instant yeast 1 1/2 teaspoon salt 115 g unsalted butter (softened) Cinnamon filling 200 g brown sugar 2 teaspoons cinnamon 115 g softened butter 1/2 cup nuts (cashews, walnuts, almonds...) Strawberry jam 12-15 strawberries 50 g sugar (or more if you like it sweeter) 1 tablespoon of cornstarch Cut strawberries in 1/4 or 1/8ths and simmer with the sugar until softened, about 3-5 minutes.  Add a spoonful of this in a cup with the ...

Strawberry & raspberry amaretti cheesecake

Is there such a thing as baking too many cheesecakes?  Because, really, cheesecakes take time to master.  And just when you think you've got it down, you mess one up because there is a "tour de main" or trick to making them and it's all about... jiggliness!  It's mastering the right cooking time, because all our ovens are different, the right cream cheese, as they're different in every country, the right amount of setting ingredient (flour or cornstarch...), etc. I've made many versions because there are no-bake varieties (these are the most tricky in my opinion because of the gelatin or setting factor) or the oven-baked kinds (with or without a water bath).  The following version is the most straightforward and fuss-less variety I've encountered, I made this cheesecake readily with ingredients I had at home. Here is what I used :  Cookie crust :  150 g or 1 cup mix of butter cookies and amaretti,  30 g sugar,  50 g butter,  1/4 teaspoon...
