Traveling from home - French island vacation a few hours from Paris

We try to go to the ocean or the beach several times a year and here it is already the month of May and covid-19 oblige, I can still only dream ! Oh the lucky ones among you who are already on the coast and can feel the ocean or sea breeze, sand between your toes or swim or sail in the waves. How I envy you !

As we can’t travel yet, here’s a sneak peak at a lovely travel destination, as seen from home, while we await the lifting of restrictions (and opening of borders).  Off we go to the western coast of France to the island of Ile de Ré, in the Charente Maritime region, in the Golfe de Gascogne, only a half-day's drive from Paris.

This may seem a timid destination to remember, as there are so many seaside places to choose from, but I found pics readily on my phone from a trip last August. Why this island in particular?  Of course, on Ré you'll find tourist attractions, port towns, markets, outdoor cafés and plazas, crepe and ice cream vendors, soft sand beaches, delightful rentals with heavenly views or patios, seaside spas, fresh seafood..., I could go on.

Another walk in the village, in Sablanceaux, and a sneak peak of an ocean view garden.
But for me, there's something so unexpectedly poetic about the island of Ré.  Just wander around at sunset and there's a sweet stillness during the "magic hour", when we we would hunt as a family for that magic lighting and quiet.  You can see life differently for just a tiny moment in time.

No photo description available.

Open air markets in Saint-Martin-de-Ré
When our kids were small, they would learn to surf for a week or two, fly first small, then quite large kites. We would bike from one end of the island to the other, often going from lively ports and sleepy villages to sea-salt mines and oyster farms. Nowadays, it's mostly reading, yoga or running on the beach, seeking market produce for lunch on the patio, afternoon tea or a cocktail or live music on deck chairs at a beach bar or café. Then dinner in an outdoor restaurant serving local flavor, or grilled fresh seafood on the barbecue at sundown.  It doesn't take much to vacay around here.

Fisherman's houses have been converted into homes or flower shops or galleries.

It's a place I wouldn't tire of, where I will often go, to connect with the beauty and stillness of life.

Here are some more pics, enjoy !

Voici quelques photos, enjoy!

Shops, art galleries, cafés, restaurants in pedestrian only streets in la Flotte en Ré.

Lavender may not be indigenous to the region, nevertheless it's a sight to behold.

The roses trémières or wild hollyhocks surprise you at every turn,
in colors and sizes almost beyond the reach of the imagination.

Cotton sponge cake with strawberries and cream cheese frosting

My kids had a birthday to celebrate so I made the cakes and they decorated. I used to do this when my children were small, set up a table for them to decorate cookies or gingerbread houses, even had parties like this, and to this day, they like assembling treats and are good cooks. Here's the batter recipe I often use which you can find in my other recipes (mocha sponge, apple cider cake...) : Cotton sponge cake recipe : 4 eggs, separated 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar 1-1/4 cup (180 g) cake flour 3/4 cup (150 g) confectioner's sugar 1/4 cup cider (60 g) (French kind, or 4.5% alcohol) or beer or carbonated water 1/4 cup (60 g) sour cream (or thick cream) 1/4 cup (60 g) milk (as needed) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt Preheat oven to 180° F / 350° C.  Line pan with parchment paper.  I used a 7" spring-form pan and a small fluted brioche mold. Beat egg whites until soft peaks form.  Add granulated sugar a little at a time and continue

Santa Swiss roll

Hello, everyone! Now that it's the season... Had quite a bit of fun making this yule log.  I was dreaming of a red and white Santa-inspired cake with raspberries. I was so pleased with the result, the cake was so soft and not too sweet, the cream light and the raspberries added that perfect tanginess and sweetness. Here's the recipe for the pink velvet and raspberry base: 60 g cooking oil 80 g milk 100 g cake flour 70 g sugar + 3 tablespoons more for the egg whites 6 eggs, separated 1 teaspoon vanilla or 1 teaspoon of coffee extract 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon red gel food color + fresh raspberries, rinsed and pat dried + macarons, candies, sprinkles to decorate Cream cheese frosting 200 g heavy whipping cream 200 g softened cream cheese 50 g confectioners sugar 1 teaspoon lemon juice Preheat hoven 340° F / 170° C. Line a large rectangular baking sheet with parchment paper (I used a 13" x 17" pan). In a bowl, whisk cooking oil, milk, sugar, egg yolks, vanilla, salt

Strawberry & mandarine naked cake

How about a birthday cake this time, festive and full of flavor? Surprisingly, I was able to slice this one into 25+ pieces so everyone could get a taste. It's got a 7 layers including 3 layers of butter cake and 3 layers of cream with an inside layer of fresh strawberries in syrup and another layer with mandarine orange slices. All this topped with chocolate dipped strawberries nestled in cream.  On a side note, I made this cake while away on vacation in the US, meaning, I used ingredients I could find readily, I had to deal with cream and rising factors that are different from what I'm used to, eggs and strawberries that are so much bigger, flour is enriched..., none of this is bad, you just have to adjust.  To add to this fun experience, I made the chocolate-dipped and drizzled strawberries 2 days before with family, and the cake and frosting 24 hours before.  That way on the day of the party, I just had to dress the cake. Here's the cake recipe :
